I would like to replace the rear oil seal on the gearbox connecting to prop shaft.
The seal is held in place by a metal cap tightly pressed on to the aluminium case.
I notice two crimped spots around the edge of this cap.
What is the best way to remove this cap?

You need to prise it off. Do you have the new seal in stock? The bronze sleeve may be worn - a new seal may not make much difference - but worth a try.

The original one is crimped over in a couple of places, neatest way to get over this is to file an 1/8'' groove at these points.

I can get seals locally. "the bronze sleeve" is that the end of the prop shaft that slides onto the splines? If this part is worn I could get it turned or resleeved locally and a suitably different sized seal fitted. Would that work?

Yes - if the bushing is worn - I'm sure you can have one made locally. New ones need to be pressed in and then reamed to size anyway. How bad is the oil leak? If 'not much' I would leave well alone! Can you noticeably lift the prop shaft up/down in the bushing ?
