Rear brake seals??

Can someone tell me which way the seals are installed on the rear wheels? My dad took the old ones out when I wasn't watching!! I am guessing that the "open" part of the seal goes towards the axle?
Thanks so much,
Patty

Open part towards the centre of the car.

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand the question, or how Katy has managed to answer it (although I admire her telepathy  ). As I see it...
The wheels do not have any seals.
The brake seals are surely in the cylinders, which face up and down, not towards the axle or the car.
There is an oil seal in the hub where it fits on the axle. This could, indeed, be described as facing in or out.
There is a cover over the handbrake operating arm. This is a dust seal, but it really can fit only one way round.

Sorry if I'm being dim, but to which seals are we referring?

I'm sorry - I should have been more clear. I am asking about the seal that is behind the wheel bearing. There is an open side with the spring, and the flat side. Which side faces the differential?
Thanks for your help!

The 'flat' side faces the differential. The side with the spring faces the source of the oil, i.e. inside the rear hub.
