Gearbox noise

I recently had to swap the gearbox on my dads traveller as after a quarter of a million miles it was starting to make noises.
I put another box in and the car was good to go again but i'd like to repair the original as it worked well enough but was just noisy.
The symptoms are a clacking knocking tapping noise when in neutral with the engine ticking over and a similar noise in second and top gear (i think i'm correct in saying)
At first we thought this was engine or starter motor related but depressing the clutch pedal made the noise vanish; releasing it brought the noise back.
What is it likely to be and can i get the parts to DIY so i can keep the old box as a good spare?

Unusual for a 'box to be noisy in top gear - which is straight through drive. However it could well be the main shaft bearings or perhaps the layshaft and the laygear bearings. Needs opening up to find out. If it's a 'smooth case' box from a 948 engine - it's unlikely to be economic to repair it.......

It may have been first and third but the main issue was the loud clacking noise whilst in neutral. Its a ribbed case box from a 1098cc saloon. I wondered if anyone had any ideas before i open it up?

In neutral the input shaft will be spinning the laygear - hence my suggestion re layshaft bearings and/or main bearings - just open it up!

Is it the original gearbox, or has it been rejuvenated at some point in the past. I opened up a core gearbox and found the hub detent balls and spring shards in the bottom of the box.
Be sure you have the maintenance manual, and follow every step. I printed the pertinent pages and had them laminated.
Peruse my earlier thread for pertinent information.

I had exactly the same noise on mine, and eventually it started to kick out of top gear, swapped boxes, rather then rebuilding and discovered that there was massive free movement on the first motion shaft on the old box,the bearings had obviously gone, putting the clutch down obviously stops the thrust onto the first bearing in the box.Unfortunately you can't really check this bearing with the engine in place because the clutch plate holds the shaft steady, you need to be able to get hold of the shaft and test by feel. I personally don't think its viable to rebuild a box, they are plentifull and cheapish secondhand,at present anyway, and as long as known to be good a lot quicker. But several have rebuilt each to their own.

Thats great, thanks all. I'll try to have a look and see what its like inside when i get a mo. I like to repair if i can and then it'll be a good spare..

Have you rebuilt gearboxes before? If not best to take loads of pictures, and keep every thing in the right order.
I rebuilt a 1600E and had a nut left over

,but the box worked a treat

but……………...
I never enjoyed travelling at 60 backwards
