1098 gearbox reassembly

I have replaced ny daughters 1098 lay gear/shaft, reverse and first gears and reinstalled the whole assembly. Gears on the 3rd motion shaft are a nice fit but the 2nd gear hub (on which the first gear is located) has a fair bit of lateral play probably as much as 1/8*. By lateral I mean uo and down the shaft rather than 'wobble' on the shaft itself. I can't remember if this is usual - certainly all the parts that came out went back!

Thanks, John

Did you change the bearings? I gather there is a problem with modern bearings being thinner than the originals.

No the originals were fine, I imagine you are referring to the rear main shaft bearing that locates in the rear alloy housing. If that were the case what's the solution - how much play should there be if any? Thanks, John

Think I will strip it down again and recheck. May have to turn down a packing washer otherwise it will slip out of 2nd gear. Still not sure of acceptable lateral tolerances on the main shaft though?

Let's see a picture - are all the gears nicely aligned with the laygear ? Once in gear - the balls/springs etc hold it IN - the selector forks merely position the hub to allow the dog teeth to engage. But it is not unknown for 1st gear selection to go 'overcentre' and be extremely difficult to get it back out again!
