Hi has anyone fitted both the felt seal and the rubber seal for the crank in the timing chain cover , you can position the felt seal behind the rubber seal it rests against the rear of the rubber seal snuggly i just wondered if anyone had tried this and found it to help prevent leakage.

The early felt seals were a known source of leaks, and there is no way to fit both types of seals into the same cover. Better to fit the later timing cover with the 'lip' seal. Make sure you fit the crankshaft pulley through the seal to centralise the cover before tightening the screws.

thanks richard i assembled it behind the rubber seal there is space but if it is surplus to requirements i'll whiz it back out , thanks for the tip on centralising the crank pulley first .

There is no needs to play games with it - just fit the rubber seal, fill the lips with grease - and centralise as Richard describes. They never leak if done correctly.

wasnt playing with it there were two seals in the packet didnt have the manual with me so i just thought if it fits whack it on ,there is plenty of space it wasn't that much of a squeeze what it actually does is push the centre of the rubber seal forward only about a millimetre which in effect closes up the diameter of the rubber seal i'm going to have another look tomorrow and see how it grips the pulley shaft i have to release the bolts to centralise it so i can easily remove it if its too tight , who knows it might be a success you never know till you try ,the engine will be run on testbed without the luxury of negative pressure so if its going to leak it will do it then , i can spend another 20 mins mucking about removing it , i'll let you know how / if it works.

It will NOT work - there is absolutely NO need. The thrower will be churning against it and it will break up and be carried round the engine...

Hi BMC as posted i will be removing it , i tried to get the pulley wheel off this morning but failed miserably , so i'm off to my mates tonight to use his air powered percussion socket gun thingy .

As advised felt seal removed , timing chain cover refitted and new bottom bolt needed , all seems oil tight , engine back in on wednesday , start the running in process again wednesday night

The cover screws are just 1/4 UNF. Put a good one in the bottom - and the less good one higher up meantime where it matters less.. It's more likely the (front) plate you are screwing into has stripped - rather than the screw thread failed.....
