Original engine 948, 950 cast on the block. 1275 has no tappet chest cover plates

Sounds like a gold seal unit from the numbers. Can you post some pics of both sides of the engine so we can tell you what you have?

It is almost certainly a 1098 unit I think. There is a temp sensor in the cylinder head which 950 cars did not have although a 1098 head can be fitted to the 950 engine I think( correct me if I'm wrong chaps). The profile of the cylinder head and the presence of tappet covers in photo 2 also suggest 1098 or 948 and certainly not 1275. The 1275 has a very distinctive breather arrangement on the front timing cover and the visible face of the head is quite different too.
If it's a 948, you should find 950 cast into the engine block just behind the pipe that goes vertically from the from tappet cover by the radiator to the floor. It's the one just behind the radiator hose in photo 2. If it is not there then there may be an alloy plate which says 1100 on it which will also tell you which size it is. I can't see the oil filter from the pics but if you see a screw in type filter as opposed to a filter head and bowl assembly below it then you probably have an 803 unit from a Series 2! Hope that helps
