Speedometer issue!

Hi there everyone, have had my first problem with my minor - the speedo stopped working! It squeeked for about quarter of a mile while I was going about 40, and then stopped working entirely.

Tested it using a drill and it was completely seized, so I stripped it down as far as I could go to try and fix the problem - turns out it's jammed/stuck between the bit that spins & accepts the drive and the housing (if that makes sense), but I can't strip it down any further to try and fix it, as it's held by 2 rivets that I don't fancy drilling out as I don't know how I could refix it.

The jammed speedo broke the drive cable too :x

So the question is: has anyone got any experience with this problem and any ideas on how to fix it without drilling the rivets?

Or if not, what speedo could I replace mine with? The serial number is: 4419/04 1376 in a 1965 minor 1000, although I'm thinking this is perhaps not the right one? I'm not particularly concerned with originality, so do I just need to find one with a similar tpm to 1376?

Thanks everyone!

Just grab another speedo -always plenty about - £5 should secure one ! It really should be a 1408 tpm speedo for your final drive - but the difference is tiny, either would do.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out, and 5 quid?! All I've been able to find is closer to £30...

Thanks for the link Matt, I've already been scouring the auctions, I had seen that one, but as far as I know it wouldn't be suitable - 1280 tpm is a bit low (I think)

The 1408 is the correct speedo for a 1098/4.22 diff but over reads considerably so you may well find that a 1376 would be more accurate. Test it against a sat nav.

Was that a change that BMC made, to try to correct the wildly optimistic readings?

hi again, would this be a suitable replacement?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281167896673? ... 1438.l2649

I know it's from a mini, but it is 1408tpm, and I presume the same diameter and so will fit?

You could count actual tpm for your car if you have enough speedo cable left.
Lay out a course of 52 ft. 9.5 inches, that's 1/100 of a mile. count your turns over that course and multiply by 100.

This will help, too.

As long as it is 1408 it will be fine. Very slight difference in the mounting lugs - but easily fitted to a Minor.

And thanksfor the link - I've already had a read through - it says at one point that he's never had to drill out the two rivets that I need to!

Cracking idea! Although my speedo cable is well and truly knackerd, but I might have to give this a go!

& bmc, cheers, I might have to buy this one if it goes for cheap!
