Fuel tank sender unit

Hi I am new to this and need advice. I recently purchased a 1970 Traveller. I filled the tank for the first time yesterday and there are petrol fumes in the car. The area around the sender unit on top of the tank is damp. My question is can I remove the sender unit with the tank in place ? Regards Terry

Yes you can without removing tank. Remove spare wheel and unscrew the screws holding the unit in place. The gasket must be a cork gasket, nothing else will do, the petrol eats through anything else. Make sure the 2 faces are clean before putting back together.

I think you can, easiest to remove the floor above first though.
Spray a bit of Plusgas or 3 in 1 on the screw threads before you start and find a screwdriver that is a very good fit, they probably haven't been moved in 40 years.

Have ordered the gasket and new bolts. I will let you know I get on.

It's possible that the roof of the tank is porous - due to corrosion from condensation over the years - in which case, new tank is the answer......

What a lazy boy I have been. Ran the tank half full all this time. Just replaced the gasket. Turned out to be a piece of cake, all the screws came out ok, no corrosion. Filled the tank, no leaks. Thanks guys. Terry
