fluid (brakes)

can anyone help me out there my 1960 minor (susie) has just had a new m/c on what type of fluid can i use i have got loads of silicon dot 4 is that any good as i think this is for modern cars

If you've got that much ---use it! Usually it's advisable to start with a good clean system.

Dot 4 is fine, but that ISN'T silicon!

If you have silicon fluid the safest way is to replace all the seals in the cylinders as it can affect old seals making them swell, causing brake problems. At the same time you want to clean out your old brake lines, but it may be easier to just use new brake pipes and new cylinders. After you've done that it will be a nightmare to bleed as silicon fluid doesn't mix with air in the same way so it can be a real pain to push the bubbles out.

thank u for your help in the fluid matter i think i will use the dot 4 as it seems easier to bleed the system by the way the fluid i have got is dot 4 synthetic not silicon as i said before
