Door rebuild

I am now rebuilding the doors on my traveller, this is involving stripping the least rusty metal and best chrome bits from 2 donor doors.
Can anyone advise on the best method of treating the metal behind the rubbers to prevent rust without rotting the rubber, I have lots of waxoil left?
Also anything to but on the old rubbers around the quarter light to keep them soft?
Any other comments that might overcome problems I've not thought of
