Hi all,
this is my first posting here.
I've got a 1967 Morris 1000 traveller. I noticed that the diff was abit noisy the other day so went to check the oil. Sure enough it was low. (Now I will point out the diff and axle has all new seals on it)
Anyway. Long story short I did some investigating and found that the nearside hub was too hot to touch. You could hear the grease and oil actually fizzing it was so hot.
My question is, what could make it get that hot? The drum seemed fine to touch, so I would on that basis discount the brakes rubbing.
Any suggestions? could it be a massively overtightened wheel bearing? Do you need to draw the halfshaft to replace this?
any advice gratefully received.

You urgently need to check the bearing - if you are sure it's not dragging brake. Halfshaft just falls out - no worries there..Then feel the bearing for tight/rough/free-play etc. Better not use the car till then!

It is the bearing. Too much play. The inner (where the half shaft passes through the bearing) is really badly scored.
Plus, the oil seal has given up.
But. Whoever was in there last has done the king nut up so tight I can't move it at all.
Is it a backwards thread? Eg: turn clockwise to undo?

Yes it is a left hand thread on the left hand side (easy to remember!) Try to get hold of the correct size spanner rather than resorting to hammer and chisel. Not sure of the imperial size but 47mm will fit.
