Electronic ignition?
I have seen a few different systems advertised, magnetronic and optronic which if any is best? Or, would i be better off saving up a few more pennies and going for an aldon distributor? What do you reckon?
Cheers

Aldon every time in my opinion. Not heard anything bad reported, whereas the various other optronic/magnetronic systems I have heard about have failed and caused problems.
I have used an Aldon Ignitor for years and am more than pleased with it. It all hides under the dizzy cap so there's no ugly heat sink that you have to bolt to the inner wing.

I had a lumention magnetronic one, and it failed when it was 4 years old, I got another unit for free. But it is a hudge inconvience when it does fail, because unless you can covert back to points at the roadside, you have to be towed!

I have not tried the Ignitor II as I think you have to have their coil with it too.
The Ignitor 1 (original) is available for the 25D4 dizzy, so should fit the 948 and 1098 no problems. They do a negative earth and positive earth version so make sure you have decided which route to go before buying as you can't change the polarity of the car once it is fitted!
You should not need the complete dizzy. If your engine is standard then the advance curve will be correct for it. If you wish, you may want to get it overhauled though while you are at it. Aldon used to do that too. Not sure if they still do. Won't be cheap though.............

The picture is of the Lumention "Magnetronic" system fitted to my Travellers distributor. I would think the Aldon unit is similar. The module can just be seen top left under the trigger disc. It replaces the points, condensor and that flimsy l.t. wire. The rotor arm as seen is retained.
Fitting instructions are of course included.
Note - this is the 2nd module. I did have a couple of problems. The first disc (there's a dot on that to line up correctly with the rotor arm) would not fit over the cam lobes of the distributor spindle
exchanged and after approx. 2 months after fitting, the original module "melted," fortunately when backing out of the garage at home! A replacement was supplied, no questions. This has been fine now for about 3 years.

A pleasure Colin
Well not strictly melted Gareth as in a molten blob
but it was a very dark charcoal colour and v. hot. When going to shut the garage door I detected this whiff of burning electrical component(s), looked under the bonnet and was greeted by smoke issuing from under the distributor cap.
As I said the replacement has been fine and I'm very pleased with it.
