temperature gauge

fitted a nos smiths gauge today. went for a short drive and
it went to 140 degree centigrade.
which seems high to me.
i have a 88 stat.
its fitted to 10v out put .
what should i do or check please :-?

Are you sure the gauge is in centigrade?

But that's ok - compare the readings with a 'domestic' oven thermo in the radiator neck after a good run. Care when removing the rad cap...
