I was interested to see this ad on Ebay. The car looks quite nice - wonder if we will see a rush of pre 1960 cars registrations for sale, due to the MOT exemption. Many years ago a friend bought to restoration project Jaguar XJS V12 that he wanted the number from, and asked me if I could get it through an MOT as that was the only way it could be transferred. Although I managed to get the car to start (and stop), it was going to need far too much welding work that would make it not to viable a proposition.

Going back to the Ebay ad, I wonder if he sells the reg for the asking price - the car will be offered up for £1000.

The plate of course if purchased will not make another car 'MOT exempt' - that status will remain with the car which is up at £1950 including the plate - and frankly looks quite fair at that price. Pity about the additional 'bee-hive' indicators.......
Actually - looking again -it's not clear if the car is an additional £1950 AFTER buying the 'plate' in the auction.....

It's much cheaper and easier to change your name by deed poll.

Amount of post '60 Minor's with pre '60 identities is growing.

So check all id numbers before you buy.

It my understanding that pre 1960 cars must have an MOT before going back on the road and then will be exempt providing you keep it taxed and insured.

Nope any car manufactured before 1st January 1960 doesn't need an MoT. So you can pull yer great auntie Freda's 1959 Morris whatever out ofthe barn it's been rusting away in until today and just go n tax it, provided it's insured usually as a classic hardley ever used for about £120 and then just go to work every day in it untill someone gets killed. Billiant init!

Just pull that old Log Book out of the drawer - insure it - tax it - and now you can happily transfer the number plate........No-one asks to see the vehicle.......

I agree, it's completely bonkers! Why they couldn't just trim down the MOT to a basic 'Safety Check' for older cars - you know - brakes, suspension, steering, rot etc, obviously at a lower price than a full-blown MOT - totally escapes me. It's great to keep the costs down for classic motoring, but not at the cost of peoples lives! I believe the thinking was that classic car owners were all totally in control of the condition of their own cars - but how many of us have a four post lift in the garage? Tis nice having a car you can pretty much fix with a welding torch and a hammer though!

The DVLA site clearly states that

"Pre-1960 vehicles need a valid MOT to transfer a registration number"

so the ebay seller will not be able to transfer the number without getting an MOT on the vehicle first.

Yeh I agree. After all if Stuart Hall can be given a sentence based on legislation in 1970's then why cant classics have a similar test as was in the year they where made

MoT test didn't start untill 1960 but u know what I mean! 1960 being the lowest standard

That makes better sense Louise - well spotted. Is that something DVLA have added recently? I can't find the old Mini log book anyway......... And the Reg number is worth several thousand pounds......or so some Reg Number sellers would have you believe.....

I don't know when this specific wording was added but the information has been available on the DVLA site since the introduction of the MOT exemption for pre-1960 vehicles. Details were posted here back in November: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=47582

Ive never met 'Im, but this Reg Numbers bloke must be worth a few quid.

the mot bit hasen't been added its just been left as it always was ie to transfer a no the vehicle must be mot.ed and have been taxed within the last three months or is it six can't be bothered to look. How do I know, just sold mine.

and the easiest way to do that is to book an MOT test and have a trained proffesional lookover your car and handywork. It takes less than an hour and costs under £50 and is some proof of roadworthyness (ok on that day only but its how its always worked) if and when an accident occurs....
This demand for pre 60 cars just to save the cost of the MOT test and any repairs is mad, silly and scary. I have a scruffy A30 outside my workshop that I ould have sold several times this year purely because it can be insured and taxed and driven away. Has it got rear spring hangers? Er not totally... Does anyone care? Not really..... It stays where it is, till either it gets repaired or broken for spares.

I thought the MOT was a basic safety check. Whats to trim down? Certainly no car has to meet standards that it wouldn't have done when new. Most of the MOT check list gets a line drawn through it for our cars. A cheaper price would be appreciated as there's so little to test on older cars though...

Incidentally our local MOT test place is offering a reduced price for tests on pre 1960 cars - £30 instead of the usual £46.
Encourages owners to bring their cars in and keeps some of the oldercar business which may otherwise be lost. And its a cheap enough safety check that there's no real excuse not to...
Common sense is alive and well in a small corner of Worcestershire at least!
