So, we asked for advice, you told us to cut the rust out, so we started.......Now it seems there is even more. Early days, but I guess that Tom and I will carry on cutting for now....
Plans? We bought a car that had loads spent on it (engine 'box, full interior, respray etc) so not too many grand plans. The engine is a brand new 1098 with new gearbox. We have been reading about 5 speed conversions with interest though. And maybe a mild tune up.
Right now though there are a load of panels in the hallway and a car on it's side in the drive. And thunderstorms![frame]

There's always more rust than you think I'm afraid..... 
Your 1098 will work fine with a five speed box, I fitted a type 9 to my 1275 (but my 1098 was knackered and I got a good deal on the 1275 - ex MG Midget), I do wonder if perhaps a period MG box with overdrive would have been more in keeping with the car though?..............

But please stop now and think you cannot keep on cutting out
Otherwise you will have no reference points and you will also weaken the whole integrity of the vehicle
A section or two adjoing sections yes, but unless you provide welded in struts etc you should replace a section at a time
Keep up the good work and save another moggie from the dreaded scrappy in the sky

Ok, we should have said that we ARE cutting methodically! The plan is nearside first: A post, sills after bracing, rear shackle mounts, then flip over and repeat. The crossmember needs to be done too, but we figured this gets done after the sills, to give a clean finish to weld to.
We had not heard about the MG overdrive 'box, will look into it.
It all seems VERY slow progress though. The house looks like the Harrow branch of Bull Motif or Charles Ware!
Sure you are all used to that!
I am concerned about the door alignment, which was not very good when we bought the car. I am keen to square this up, so tips welcome.

There are several on eBay at present, just type in MG overdrive gearbox, the overdrive operated, I believe, from either a switch on the dash on early cars or one incorporated into the gear lever on later cars. I'm sure someone on here can tell you more.
Whichever route you take you will also need to consider the flywheel, propshaft (shorter) and clutch arrangement.

The only MG overdrive gearbox is for the MGB, which has a B-series engine not A-series. Ford type 9 is the best five speed (overdrive fifth) option.

Nice to see someone working on the drive...I haven't even got that...I'm working on the street. Like the MG wheels too.
