Hi, I have bought a new morris side vale engine an up on rebilding have found the flywheel has 80 teeth not 102 so my starter motor wont turn it over. Could anybody please tell me how many teeth are on the starter motor bendix for an 80 teeth flywheel as my starter has 9 teeth?

Many thanks Matt

I'm pretty sure you can get a 10 tooth bendix.

You have either a Morris 8 or WD generator engine flywheel. Has it got extra threaded holes in the face? Tell me more about the engine. See http://seriesmm.mmoc.org.uk Tech Info, Ex WD engines

There are no extra holes on the flywheel an I am sure it's a Morris eight engine. The enginenumber isc78734 an cast in the block it says 1.1.57 31649 hope this helps.

I have had the same problem, I changed the flywheel.
According to the Morris Register "Morris 8 Information Manual" the Morris 8 has 6 volt electrics and uses a M35G starter. Early models had a 10T starter and 80T flywheel, later cars had a 9T starter and 80T flywheel. Series MM has 12 volt electrics and M35G starter.
Any photos of the engine?

I found out the same way, had to take my shoes and socks off to count up to 80.!!!
Engine out, timing cover and chain off, main bearings off, lift crank, remove flywheel. Replace, reassemble.
Photos in car will do

To tell the truth its not in a car its in the president tractor. Same block as the morris 8 with a few differances in the oill filler ect but have sorted all that an fitted in to the tractor. aAn have now found out that morris put a differant flywheel starter ring on the tractor engine.

In a President tractor, even more interesting, the WD engine head may fit it.

Excellent! And easy access to adjust the 'tappets' (they really ARE tappets on this engine ) !!

That looks like the WD version of the USHM3 engine. The water jacket does not have a dynamo mounting bracket and is probably cast iron not alloy

Yeah it is a cast block an i have a dynamo mounting bracket that has to be bolted on with the head. Do you think a morris eight starter motor would fit it or is my best bet to get a 10 tooth bendix for my old starter?

You need a Morris 8 starter. Ideally -= you need to try to get a measurement of where the flywheel ring gear is relative to the centreline of the starter hole, and then check if the M8 starter has a large enough bendix gear to engage. The different number toothed A series starters are all the same diameter on the head! They just have a slightly different cranking ratio on the flywheel. I can confirm from my Morris 8 days - the 6 volt M8 starter works extremely well on 12 volts.......
