Greasing prop shaft

Post by little_pete »

I'm having trouble getting my grease gun to engage on the prop shaft nipples anyone got any suggestions, just doesn't seem to adequate clearance. I also didn't know that you were suppposed to do them every 1000 miles! I thought the most important was the suspension parts to grease. (not that I've done 1000 miles, but until I start using it regulary I generally grease all round every couple of months when I get the chance)

You might try rotating the shaft to where the grease nipples are in a little more open spot.
Also, some grease chucks are thicker (fatter) than others, check around for a skinnier one that will fit on the end of your grease gun.

Yeah I've tried rotating it around approaching from the left, from the right, below using a flexi hose and rigid hose, no joy.

Manual says 3000 miles actual the same as suspension, but I read somewhere on here while trying find a cunning solution that it's recommended every 1000! I can imagine some critical suspension parts that you might want to do more often

Yep - BMC wksp manual say grease all nipples except steering rack every 1000 miles.
Used to keep me very busy in the BMC garage were I worked carrying out 1000 mile services.

Try fitting the longer grease nipple in the UJ (available from ESM. Part No DIF 155 £0.90) and you will have no further trouble greasing the joint.

Are you using the Tecalemit supplied gun or some other one?

No I didn't get one supplied with my car. But funnily enough my granddad gave me one and I left it in my parents garage thinking the trigger ones were more powerful and convenient. I've been greasing the suspension every few months even if it hasn't been driven much, only just thought to check on the prop. A garage was supposed to have done it with the MOT and I probably haven't done 1000 miles since so I think it would be ok, just going on a 1200 mile round trip and changed absolute everything I could think of.
