Engine running rich and lumpy

1275cc Marina engine in my Minor has been running fine. That was until last week when Milton junior pulled the choke out a little far. (Not his fault. I should have made it clearer what to do!)
Sorted that issue only for engine to start running rich and lumpy like my porridge.
Mechanic friend popped round and thought I'd done something daft (again!!). However it was something in the carburettor not doing what it should and not an instantly fixable fault. He thought the jet was the most likely cause of the problem and after a wee hunt in the margins here that seems a possibility.
Any other suggestions, and if it is the jet is it a case of removing the carburettor and replacing the jet?
(Mr bmcecosse has suggested that I change the current 1.25" for.something a bit bigger, so he may have nipped round when I wasn't looking and hastened the demise of the old asthmatic mechanical!!j
