Can they lose some of their output of do they either work or not work? Does anyone know please.

Les - they are 3 phase generators - so yes - they can lose one or even two phases and still give a charge, which in summer use is probably plenty to run the car. The crunch comes in winter with lights+heater+wipers etc......and it just can't keep up with the load.

Thanks for that, looks like I might have a problem then.
