So, preparing to change my gearbox at the end of next week - unfortunately an axle stands and sweat job, but preparing now... by asking what do I need to order to complete the job? I know I need a new gasket for the side panel of the gearbox (as I have had it open to check condition of the gears)... but what other things do I need - for example would it be wise to change the gearbox mounts at the same time?

2 litres of fresh oil. Straight 30 wt non-detergent.

10W40 is fine in the gearbox - less drag when cold.

Just an aside about gearbox or engine mounts, if you live by a river or the sea and have access to boats Fender rubber makes excellent mounts. Ask for a bit when they are repairing the fenders ( tugs are good) and get them to cut it with a sharp knife, dont use a saw it will clog up and breaks band saw blades real quick.

gearbox mounts can be inspected from under the car before you start.
If they are peeled away from the steel plates and heavily perished it's a good time to change them.

The output shaft seal is worth changing, however if the rear plain bush (bearing) is worn, then even a new seal is going to struggle.
If you have some play in the propshaft where it sits in the gearbox then that bush is worth replacing.
Unfortunately the bush needs to be reamed to size after fitting in the gearbox tail assembly. I've had a few of these done by an engine machining firm, but you need to find one with an adjustable reamer.


If the clutch thrust bearing is heavily worn, then replace that too! If you drive with your foot leaning on the clutch pedal it'll only last approx 20k miles!

Finally - the clutch intermediate shaft sits in some plain bushes and they sit in a rubber holder. The bushes wear out and if left like that the shaft wears through the rubber holder as well! Replace the bushes if they look oval (or worse).

Brilliant, thank you! Old side gasket wasn't damaged, rubbers seem okay, thrust bearing plenty of carbon, front seal looks new. There is slight play on the front shaft - but been told it's okay on this forum given only 1/1.2 mm play at the end of the shaft. So... straight swap with no new bits!!
