New Minor owner

My Morris.

I have recently acquired a lovely black 4 door 1968 morris minor. This is my first car but it turns out this exact car was my dads first car. I have such fond memories of this morris from my early childhood, the noise it makes, the unmistakable smell inside. it all made such an impression on me as a kid and i just had to own a morris minor. However i never thought i`d ever end up with the old family morris, its amazing that 20+ years later its back in the family. It really is a great little machine and every bit as good as i remember it. Sure its not in show car condition (albiet it does look nice and shiny) but mechanically it is bang on, it is as responsive as any modern car ive driven. It has been in daily use its whole life and has covered around 20,000 miles every year for the last 40 years, its a true work horse of a car! Because it has always been the owners main and only car it has been incredibly well looked after and never had a chance to sit around to go rusty and seize up. I want to keep this car working hard and continue to look after it as well as its previous owner and my dad did. It will undoubtedly provide me with many years of motoring joy!

I may be requiring some help from you Morris lovers from time to time as im not particularly experienced with the mechanical side of things, i have a box full of service manuals which explain things very well but im sure im going to need some help identifying parts etc.

Well thats my car, any hints or tips for a new driver/moggy owner will be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks

Ed

P.s As far as I'm aware this car has never been garaged in its whole life, just goes to show that with the right care and enough waxoyl these Morris Minors can survive anything the British climate can throw at them!

I know, I saw it and though it looked the same but low and behold it had the same numberplate and everything, all his old paper work too! Its quite nice really as my dad has recently lost most of his eyesight and is unable to drive, now I can drive him around in his old Morris that he loved to bits! Well when I get my license anyway, im still a learner. I have my test in 10 days so fingers crossed it all goes smoothly!

Ah Matt, you may be a very good person for me to know! Im no more than a mile away from scaynes hill (near Haywards heath hospital) would love to take a look at your cars and maybe you could show me the ins and outs of my little Morris some time. Im very technically minded being an engineer but im a complete noob when it comes to cars (got bitten by the motobike bug at an early age so have barely given cars a second look) ive learned a lot from the manuals but would be nice for someone to show me the basics, what to grease, what to top up and keep an eye on etc.

By the PRH?

I thought your pics looked a bit like that ;)

My "workshop" is off the road by the 30 limit just going in to Scaynes Hill. I have a pickup, trav and 4 minis in there at the moment, a transit and a sprite parked outside

Most of my stuff is modified though

Your welcome to come over and discuss cars at some point & I have a few tools which could be used by a fellow minor/classic lover!

Great story - amazing coincidence to get the car back. And 800,000 miles !!! I wonder if that's a record for a Minor?? :-?
Does the paperwork show how many engines/gearboxes/final drives it has had while doing all these miles?

I havnt trawled through the paperwork (a big box of folders full of certificates, reciepts etc) but I know its had at least 2 engines so far as my dad has said he replaced the original back when he had it. It may have had another since and there are a couple of mods under the hood that werent there when he had it. Its certainly had its fair share of gearboxes, at least 3 that I know of. I really should go through all the history of this car but its so daunting as there really is a hell of a lot of it!

Matt I may have to take you up on your offer, I have a few spanners but that's about it! I shall keep an eye out for your place, I recently moved to southdowns park (the old mental hospital) I lived in walstead before that so you would have pretty much been a neighbour!

Its just where my cars are ;)

On average I spend 1 night a week in haywards heath, 2 nights a week in Southampton and 4 Nights a week in North Wales
