Post by Somerset51 »

Hi..I've just recently bought a Morris Minor van and looking for some info on insuring it.
Was told that the club can give me a valuation and advice about insurers!
Would apppreciate any help.

Welcome to the messageboard :D The club does have a list of approved valuers available from the club office and there are also valuers based in quite a few local branches. Whereabouts are you based? Quite a few insurers will provide agreed value insurance based on a 'self valuation' whereby you provide various photos of the vehicle, give details of the purchase price and state how much you consider the vehicle to be worth.

As quotes will depend entirely on your personal circumstances such as location, age, previous driving / claims history, amount of yearly mileage etc etc the best thing to do, as with any type of insurance cover, is to shop around and get a variety of quotes, consider what is provided within the cover then choose the policy that best suits your needs. If the van is going to be used for business purposes this will also make a difference - I'm sure there'll be someone along shortly who will be able to provide more specific advice regarding van insurance.

I bought a 1971 van in March 2011 and i'm insured with Footman James as they were the only ones who would insure it as I use 2 to 3 times a week for work. When I phoned them I just had to send to some photos of the van.My MG is insured with Peter Best as the MG is not used to go to work in.

Welcome to the forum.....you already know the true 'value' - it's how much you paid for it!! Just keep the receipt etc as evidence.... :D

I beg to differ!!
The true value of any car,may or may not be what you paid for it!!
It may even be less!,if you dont know the market and jump in without checking prices!
Anyone doing valuations will look at price guides, consider the rarity and the cond of your car,and make a valuation based on that, and what they know if anything about the marque they are looking at.
It seems many on this forum are intent on undervaluing their cars when a seller asks the price they want for it!
The buying market decides the price,so the best cars will always command the best prices!
You can buy a car, fully restore it via a resto firm, and it will likely never sell for more than its cost you.
Or you can buy a car, fully restore it yourself and you could possibly sell for more than cost!
If you are buying to keep and restore yourself, then it costs what it costs,as selling for a profit is not on the agenda!

I saw a car advertised locally last year for £1000,went to see it,could not believe my luck, made a cheeky offer, haggled then bought it!
An early 1969 Triumph 2000tc estate,2 owner car with 43k miles,in brilliant condition, meticulously maintained by both owners, all documents,MOT's,service history and,the reciept for purchase price when new.
A weekends cleaning and checking over saw it even better, and it sold very quickly for just over the cond 1 price guide value!
Clearly its value was not what I paid for it,but what, when properly presented and advertised, the price guides said it was worth and a buyer was happy with paying!
Obviously once sold its value for insurance would of been about what the buyer paid for it,but I expect he added a few hundred or even £1k to that, because prices at specialist dealers are almost always higher than private sellers.!
I dont know what price you paid for your van!
Was it private or a dealer?
Did you get a great deal, did you pay what its worth or pay to much?
Do some research on values!
When/if,you get a valuation done, for a honest opinion, dont tell them what you paid for it!
Just let them know about the van and whats been done to it,if its had resto work.

I thought it might be!
But those who dont know you wouldnt know that would they!
And they may just undervalue the car when insuring, and in the event of an accident,
not be able to replace it for that value!!
Only tell an insurance company what you paid for a car if that is its true value!
The insurance value should be what you might have to pay to a dealer for a car in the same condition.
Its a trick they use to get out of paying out its true value in the event of a claim!
No I am not a trader, just a classic car addict who was in the right place at the right time,to save a car,
and make a few quid to help keep my cars on the road!
Call that a profiteer if you like!
I've seen cars being sold silly cheap before, and not been able to afford to buy/save them!
Only to see them end up on the banger circuit!
If saving a good car from that unruly destructive mob, means I have to spend some time and/or money on it,
and sell it to an enthusiast for a fair price, making a few quid in the process then so be it!
