Which gearbox...

So, with the speedo worm on the shaft in the gearbox 'spinning', I thought I'd swap gearboxes, I have two spares to choose from - both of which are supposed to be 'good'.

Which one to choose lol.

Both of them 'seem' exactly the same - here is a piccy of the interior:[frame][/frame]

Now, I don't know which teeth are what... but they all seem solid and clean? Other elements of the gearboxes seem good - the ONLY difference really seems to be that one of them, the one that's supposed to be reconditioned has more sideways 'play' in the shaft sticking out into the bell housing.. is that called first motion?

Because of that I'd be tempted to use the other with less movement - is that a wise decision?

Any thoughts welcome, or any other 'tests' I can do?

They all have movement of some sort . The shaft you describe is the first motion shaft there is a bush behind it

Both look equally good in these pics - try to see the 1st gear teeth and the matching teeth on the laygear. Select 2nd gear and look down past...

Yes, they are pictures of the same box, both look exactly the same in relation to tooth damage - ie basically none I can see. I'm presuming that 1st gear and dog teeth are under the golden arm marked with an H? And the lay gear is below that gear un the lower shaft? Is that correct? If so they are all perfect as well.[frame][/frame]

But, the question is which one to fit - the one with movement, or the one with none in the first motion shaft? Now, Lee, yes the one with movement has been rebuilt and is good - but the movement is almost 2 mill laterally at the end of the shaft, whereas the the other box only has 0.6 or something. Won't more movement lead to oil lose?

it wont lose oil have you checked the bush?

The bush on the first motion shaft? No - how does one do that Lee? And what would you be looking out for?

Oh, by the way, when you waddle the input shaft, the gears at the end in the box also move side to side by a mill or so more too.

I had a "rebuilt" transmission with wiggle room in the first motion shaft. It turned out that the wrong spigot bushing was installed into it. There was more than .025 clearance. I rebuilt the rebuild with the correct bushing, and the wiggle went away.

All other things being equal, I vote for the box without the wiggle.

Hahahaha = madness. Why post two pics of the same box - and ask us to chose?? Let's see the OTHER box - same pic. And the first gears ?? MOST important. The 'waggle' is not important.

Hahaha back - the second was just a closer picture BMC - they both look EXACTLY the same thus no REASON to post pick of each - my question was whether to fit the waggling one or none waggling one? As for first gear I don't know which one it is - hence my next post where I asked this... ?!

So, anybody, can you tell me where, in relation to the letters I've stuck on the pic, first gear is - is it under H???? In fact telling me which each is would be handy...

If you don't know where 1st gear is......how can you judge if the other box is the same condition as the one shown...in two pictures for some reason. Show me the other box! I told you how to see 1st gear - select 2nd gear and look down past it... I'not easy but you will see enough to know if it's chipped or worn.

A and B, - gear on the first motion shaft.
C - 3-4 selector
D and E, - third gear
F and G, - Second gear
H - 1-2 selector
I - 1-2 hub

BMC - you don't need to know WHAT two things are in order to compare them and see they are 'the same'. However, I take your point - it's just that sometimes you can sound a little vitriolic. I am working extremely long hours at present and am constantly tired (exam season, trips abroad to plan etc) and so please excuse pereceived stupidity - you know, BMC, I'm a worrier.

I'll post another pic asap, and try and ensure I show 1st gear.

Yes -1st gear is under 'H' - but you should be able to see it at the ends of 'H' - but more importantly down past it when you pull 'H' to the left in that picture into 2nd gear - you should see (need good lighting) the matching teeth on the laygear which are the most vulnerable parts in the whole gearbox.
