The best place to go for a recon engine?

Hi everyone i'm looking for a place where i can get a recon 1098 engine as my 1971 saloon currently has a 948cc in it for some strange reason and i'm looking to replace it. The car feels a bit under powered with the 1098 gearing. So if anyone has got any personal experiences with a certain company I would be interested to hear them ...

Hi,
I bought my 1275 from a retired engineer who rebuilds 1098's (as a hobby) for cost, he does advertise on eBay, so I had a look.
I couldn't see one rebuilt by him but I did see this, if you want to check them out.

Hmmmm - thinks the 1098 is a 'rare' engine... and poor feedback %.... Caveat emptor... It's not everywhere that will take a 948 in exchange for a 1098. I would look out for a secondhand 1098 - and either use it as is, or trade it for a recon unit. Bull Motif units are reasonably priced I think.

And yes i have looked into the one that you have found on ebay, they are not prepared to take the 948cc off me as part of the deal

Crazy price - and at first it is 'reconditioned' and then it has been 'stripped and re-assembled'. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole........ there could be all manner of problems with it!

bmcecosse : I have contacted the seller - he says that the engine was stripped to be reconditioned but once it had been taken apart no faults were found and it was cleaned and re-assembled. The bloke is selling the engine as he is putting a larger ford zetec engine in his traveller. I am going to go and see it and have a chat to him and will move on from there. Its just a bit risky thats all..

And i don't think I would ever spend that much on an engine

I could buy another car for that ...however i have seen that advert

I will have a look at bull and see what their prices are ..

That's a crazy price for a used engine - especially one that has been taken to bits and re-assembled - maybe not too carefully. ... I wouldn't touch it - and CERTAINLY NOT at anything like that price. £100 is what it's worth - at best.
