4 door rear handles

hi all looking for an answer to this one

I have finally renovated the doors on my 56 split screen 4 door and have fitted them all , on the rear doors of the existing doors is a round arm rest/pull handle. not a leather pull strap and this is bolted through the door card. now where the bolts are fitted into the handle the timber is split

I was in bath on thursday and took the handle into Charles Ware to get a replacement and was told

"that is definetly not off a morris minor someone has fitted that" and was also told " it should be a leather pull like the front , have look round in the yard we have couple of 56 4 doors in the yard but they were both leatherpulls "

Now the orginal doors on my split screen have no holes drilled in the door for the leather pull. but have been drilled for the handle bolts, I have to stick with these otherwise my door cards which are in good condition will have holes in them.

now can someone tell me is this an add on or was this fitted to some minor models rear doors ?

never seen any like that! Doesn't mean there were not meant to be like that but they would have been very rare.
Unless you can find a similar item on another BMC car the only option might be to strip the trim off the wooden section and repair or replace it and fit the trim back on.

It could be worth giving Newton Commercial a call to see if they have come across it before.

I have just noticed that on a posting from Petee

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 94265&rd=1

that there is a photo of a 52 4 door and if you look at one of the photo`s of the back interior of the car there appears to be a partial view of the type of arm rest/door pull that you have on yours, could be worth asking the owner for pictures of the area and if he knows how its fitted, as its possible it may have been for export cars.

many thanks here is where I have got to with this.

spoke to newton commercial and in their on line cataloge shows a pull handle/arm rest on the series II 4 door

They are not sure which models this occurs on but can recover the old ones as the man said these handles are very rare no replacements are avaliable that they know of he told me how to remove the leather to repair the wood and send them off to them cost £20.00 to recover both of them plus P&P.

the photos on the model on e-bay are correct I have asked the owner to photograph the handles. I have also spoke to the gentleman at Charles Ware to put him right.

does anyone know why some models had these armrest/handles and why some had pulls???? my curiosity has got the better of me on this one

That car on ebay states it was one of the 1st sold in the UK as the original production was for overseas so it might be an export model with a different spec rear door handle to most of the ones sold in th UK.

Yup, the armrests were on the earlier four-door cars. The 1000's (1956-on) have pull-straps, rather than the arm-rests. Get in touch with Newton Commercial, and I'm sure they can do something, but I think they would want you to post the items to them for professional trimming.

hi all been on hols for a few days

Brixtonmorris to remove the handles ,do the following take the door and winder handles off, and very gentley unclip the top part of the door card from the door just enough to get your hand in, you will then feel two bolts with nuts attached using a 1/2 inch spanner you can undo the nuts.

I sprayed mine with WD40 the night before and they came undone no problem.

The timber ends where the bolts came out may be split I have stuck mine back and they will be going to newton commercial for recovering in the next few days
