Are the engines all the same eg 1098cc, 948cc ? The prefix 8G signifies that they are goldseal A series engines but the other numbers don't actually tell you anything about the engine size as they are just factory job numbers.

You look at the left side of the block - if it says '950' in the casting - there's a clue. Also take the rocker covers off and look at the head casting number - 12G202 is for a 1098 engine. There's always a vague chance that someone has fitted a 202 head to a 948 - but unlikely if everything is 'gold'.

There's a pressed aluminium tab with '1100' on it by the crankcase breather pipe, but this could easily have fallen off by now.
Cheers,
Michael

Pressed steel backplate on a 948. Cast one on a 1098.
Stock 948 manifold is squarer that the 1098 one.

The 950 is the clue. If it's not there - it will be a 1098....simples! And the head number will confirm. The little stamped plate may not be present on gold seal units...... The HEAD is the give away...

948 is pressed steel
[frame]Image[/frame]

1098 is solid
[frame]Image[/frame]

They are not interchangeable with the standard gearboxes as the clutch won't have the correct clearance, but can be swapped over to facilitate a 1098 box on a 948 engine and vice versa.

However, as stated, only 948's have "950" cast into the block so this is the most obvious way of telling.
