THE GOOD LORD GIVETH..............

Post by Coalmossian »

A fortnight ago I was trawling through Morris Parts on eBay when I spotted the one item of chrome that I have been searching for for ages for my 1960 Traveller restoration. I think I have everything that I need except for this one item!! It was a brand new, genuine Morris Minor bonnet emblem with the enamelled "M" motif! It went straight into my watched list! The Good Lord Giveth!!!
One week later I waited 'til close to the end and I put in what I considered to be a ridiculous bid! For a second or two I was the high bidder, AND THEN THE LORD TAKETH AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. At least two people put in much higher bids than wot I done and it's gonned forever!!
Never seen one available before!
Does anyone have one in really nice condition ( almost as new) that they would be willing to sell me? Must be almost perfect and have the enamelled motif. I would be eternally grateful. As you can see my original 1960 one is well past its sell-by date!
By the way, watch out for the Lord that taketh away! He appears in the bidding as u***f ( I must admit to saying something rather similar at the time!) and he has a feedback of 87!!![frame]Image[/frame]
And just for the one or two that take everything very seriously, the above is written a little tongue in cheek, though I really do want to find a really bonnie one!

You just have to bid what you are willing to pay (not what you consider will be a 'bargain') and then sit back and be happy if it doesn't fall your way...

What did it sell for in the end, ie what was the completion willing to pay above and beyond you....

They're the wrong type. Seems to be that he just buys new ones but paints the infill and sells them on!

Buy yourself a nice new chrome one and use a red Humbrol enamel to complete.

Not really the same though, and not correct for an earlier car. The ones witht he separate enamelled badges in are very nice and as far as I know not reproduced so its the luck of the chase. Should be poss to find one on a stall next weekend at Cornbury Pk maybe?
A new repro one would certainly do till a proper one turns up. You could paint the infill part with a deeper red and then varnish over it and you'd have to look closely to tell that its not an enamelled one.
On a similar finicky note, anyone got a good chrome top rail thats a mazak casting rather than the pressed version. The top edge has a distinct sharp edge and fits better against the lower edge of the bonnet than the more rounded pressings... Hmm, maybe not  I'd like one for my Series MM.
cheers

I was bidding on this as well but final price was £160+ so a tad too high for me :(

I think that, somewhere, I have a new example of the more modern, non-enamel one and I was thinking of trying to do the "M" motif surround in what they call cold enamel? It's a resin that is mixed with a hardener, and comes in translucent or transparent, and in a variety of colours including red. Has anyone tried this?
Should anyone find a new one at Cornbury Park or anywhere else, for less than £100.00p, please buy it and I promise that I shall buy it from you and pay the postage.
Our autojumbles up here leave an awful lot to be desired compared to the ones you have down South!

The chrome on mine was ok.
So I thought about the red paint and came to the conclusion that if it took etching chemicals to remove nail varnish then that might be the very stuff to use.
It worked a treat and along with the meat thermometer, the sive and the plastic funnel, became just another missing household item that nobody knew anything about.ssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

If you can get one with decent chrome you can replace the Ms on the early flashes

Wow, I didn't realise it got chased that high. What price originality eh? If I stumble over one next weekend I'll let you know.
Nail varnish trick on a late one sounds promising though, if only till a proper one turns up.

you were Snipped ?
It probably felt like that :o , although I think it is 'sniped' (for 'snipe' as in sniper rifle when using a snipe software, not snip/snipped as it cut off with scissors)

Either way, is it possible to remove the enamel badges without damaging them? If so, one option could be to mill a pocket into the non-enamel badge version to fit the badge into?

I was watching that. Mine not bad but is pitting a bit. Yes you can remove the ms. I did, very carefully with a fine blade. You need to be careful bit it is possible see here down a bit

http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... 2&start=45

You would have to be careful with the milling process to make the lip.

Why not get it re-chromed?
Mine was like yours, so I sent it to a decent chromer and it looks great now! Nice having the original enamel bits, if yours is really bad then try to get a slightly better one and get that done. All the chrome I have had re-done is so much better and has lasted so much longer that replacement chrome.
My 1956 Series 11 Traveller! Bought when I was 17 (1985)....sold 6 years (1991) later......bought back 9 years after that! (2000) With 6 different owners in the middle, what a lucky boy I am!
