Brake adjusters

What's the difference?
Two cars. 7 inch brakes all around.
Both have the smaller adjusters.
One car has shoes with larger slots where the larger adjusters fit. If I use them, I can't adjust them down enough to get the drum on.
Both cars, with the small adjusters, are near the end of the adjustment cam with relatively new shoes.

Put a thin shim under the tail end of each shoe - where it sits on the blind end of the brake cylinder. The shoes should not have deeper slots - unless someone has filed them to make them fit? You should try to upgrade to the 8" front drums (and yes I appreciate where you are) - they are much better.

The larger slots appear to be manufactured that way, not filed out. They are wider, not deeper, to fit the larger diameter on the newer adjusters. I had fashioned shim "shoes" to fit snugly on the adjuster mask for the Traveller. That's working well, putting the adjustment closer to where it should be. I just wasn't looking at the tail end for the shims. I'll give it a look.
As I'm trying to sell the convertible (my wife said, "pick one.") I'm a little reluctant to install a "field expedient" fix in a critical area. I'm trying to sort out the parts the engineers had in mind 60 years ago.
As for the 8 inchers, they're on the list.

The larger adjusters are for the 8" brakes.
Part of the excess adjustment for new shoes can be worn drums - you shouldn't need to adjust much at all if shoes and drums are new (unless the parts are faulty).

I expect the differences regarding the slots on the 7" shoes is just that the parts were not to the original design.

Are you sure the smaller adjusters are actually at the end of their travel? They sometimes 'jam' about half way round. Adjust them with the drums off and count the clicks as you do so - to see what happens as the cam moves round.

I didn't count clicks, but the screwdriver turned about 270 degrees.

Hmmm - well likely that's enough! If you don't want to fit shims because selling - just adjust up as best you can.
