Fuel pump ticks like crazy

Post by Morrisminormo »

Happy bank holiday all :D

My fuel pump is ticking like crazy, on idle it ticks randomly every other second then none then two fast ones, and when I'm driving it some times races, tick tick tick tick tick......tick.... It's very inconsistent. Just rebuilt carburettor and float level is perfect and carb appears to be set up like a dream.
I disconnected fuel pipe from carburettor and put my thumb over the end then turned ignition on, the pump will tick and ones its reached it cut out pressure will stop but does occasional ticks every several seconds.

I only picked up my car last week and it was standing for a few years until I had it and since covered 600 miles in just over a week (the return trip home was 220 miles) and on the way home I noticed the ticking was very irregular and seems to be getting worse.
I know you will find minor issues with cars that have only been used occasionally then used daily, but s it possible that the diaphragm is perishing? I really hope it's not sucking air.

There are no fuel leaks on the car and fuel lines appear in top order.

The pump will pump fuel at a good rate when disconnected from carb, and the car appears to be running fine. But yesterday whilst driving home, the pump was ticking at a good speed which seems inconstant to my driving speed/fuel use.

Any advise will be very much appreciated

The problem may be due to fuel vaporisation which is common in warm weather. See this thread for details: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... porisation

Read back your threads already - I explained about high fuel level and/or leaky float valve - and ticking pump... It's not the diaphrgam......

Hi
Float level is perfect, and its not leaking.

I disconnected fuel line from carb and put it in a bottle, turned on ignition and it looked like a science experiment! Bubbling like mad. So I disconnected fuel line from pump, put rubber pipe on and put it in a bottle of petrol and re did the procedure, it was still the same, at least I can now eliminate air leaks from the feed from tank. I unscrewed union on the input of the pump, which wasn't that tight and the sealing washer was not the correct type and had been spread. All I had available at hand was copper washer, so i used it and I refitted it. I did the bottle test again and no bubbles!!
Connected main feed and feed to carb and put ignition on and hey presto fixed!! I get a nice tick every few seconds on tick over not like the machine gun sound I had this morning.

PS I only know of the bottle test from reading existing posts on this forum,
