location Mods?

Why do so many people hide their location------How about making it a rule of posting, Mods? We don't need an inside leg measurement but a rough Idea of where they are in the world is not too much to ask!

Totally agree, but we can't make people fill this in.

I understood that certain fields have to be filled in to get access, if this is correct a location field could be one of them?

It would certainly be useful when people are selling cars and looking for parts. I'll speak to the Webmaster when he gets home

For those of you who want to add your location but don't know how, the details are shown in the "New to the messageboard? Please read this" announcement at the top of this forum:
Location : Once you have registered on the messageboard it is a good idea to show your location so that we know where you are and can point you in the right direction if you need some ‘local’ advice, parts etc. To enter your location click on the ‘user control panel’ at the top left hand side of the page and click on the ‘profile’ tab. Enter your location and click on the 'submit' button.

Louise,
As you are aware, our pride and joys get stolen regularly so the majority of people probably dont post their location for this reason.

If you know I am in Suffolk, or even Mildenhall, you won't be any closer to stealing my car and it is helpful on here. At least a county should be required, but best would be the first part of a post code...

Yes I'm only asking for a ball park location such as county but even if it was a town it would be a desperate thief who searched every road! He'd have more success following a Minor back to its home where it's kept!
ps: Thanks for having a word with the webmaster later.

The 'location' information is only useful in the event the poster has problems and would benefit from a helping hand from a near neighbour - or wishes to buy or sell car or parts. If they are happy to stay anonymous - frankly it's up to them....they will be the losers. Can't see a 'county' being a huge security risk.... but I think even a partial post code would not be wise.

No one is suggesting that people provide a postcode or street name. Just a general area location would be helpful but it's entirely up to the individual (I personally don't think giving my location as 'London' will make my car more of a target for theft). It always surprises me the number of people who seem happy to post up their full address, postcode and/or the full identity details of their vehicle on an open forum though

I'm 100% with Roy on this.

I'm as surprised as you Louise regarding your last sentence, in fact I remember, in the distant past, there was a spate of folk actually spelling out their ailments on line. No wonder there are so many scams about, with so many being free with their personal information. However back to the 'location' issue, as previously suggested a general area is all that is needed.

I'm a member of uksaabs a saab forum (funnily enough) and they have set up a map where members can post their location, so it's simple to see if there are any members close by. It can be as rough as a city or as fine as a full post code, that's up to the individual. Perhaps we could set one up on here?

@ Louise - there WAS a suggestion of a partial Post Code earlier.

Yes, I know Roy but my post was a reply to Keith's message (addressed to me) which was posted before that suggestion was made

I think in most cases just the town or nearest town would be enough, then people looking for a part/to view a vehicle could see if a visit is viable.

My location may be Sheffield, but no one is going to be desperate enough to search the entire city, surely?

Of course not unless you fill in you entire postcode which would be unwise!
