Timing question - mental blank

A simple question - does rotating the distributer clockwise advance or retard the ignition? Having rebuilt I now get pinking in third on hills so I'm assuming, nothing else having changed re mixture etc that its too far advanced.

Rotate the distributor counter-clockwise, in the same direction as the rotor arms turns, to retard the ignition timing.
