Morrisons or Wilko - 20W50 is £10 for 4.5 litres. It's perfect for a Minor.

I have used Halfords for a long time, as it bears a striking resemblance to the old Duckham's Q, but have since discovered Morris Lubricants' Golden Film, so I just bought the one tin of Halford's for topping up before the service, oil flush and switch over. For those of us who like a superior lubricant.

The best one going was undoubtedly Filtrate, sadly long gone, but I still have a few tins of Filtrate 'Plus' colloidal graphite I add to the oil.

And the oil filter promptly sucks it back out........blocking the filter  Seriously - these are not sophisticated engines - the 20W50 from Morrisons/Wilko etc is perfectly good for them.. Just don't expect it to last 'for ever' - like a coil!

If it was flake graphite I was shovelling in, then yes; but colloidal graphite particles aren't big enough to get caught by the filter.

This is a topic we could argue to the grave about...

But it is worth bearing in mind the very hard life oil has. The working parts it has to protect with only a few microns' clearance for the oil, film strength, resistance to carbonisation on the underside of piston crowns which rely on oil for cooling, detergency &c &c.

Oil should always be changed before it wears out.

buying and using cheap oil is like buying the value range from Tesco or the smart price stuff from asda.

I wouldn't feed my dog that stuff. so I wouldn't use it in my cars.

Me too Dennis = Asda Value is tops - that's if Poundland don't have it in stock.......... I put good oil (5W30 C3) in my Fusion TDCi and my Clio 16V, but Minor and TR7 are fine on the cheap stuff. The point is - the clearances on these older designs are NOT micron sized..... And yes - don't expect it to last for ever - change it every couple of years......
