I spent over an hour trying to fit a grommet in a hole through which a front brake pipe passes. The rubber seemed too hard. I tried softening it in boiling water, used fairy liquid and failed miserably to fit the beastly thing. In the end I cut it in half and trimmed bits off but it was still a struggle to make it go in the hole. It was the right size. If the rubber had been more flexible it would have fitted OK.
Is there some special trick to fitting grommets?

Buy soft rubber grommets......

Yes, I know I want soft ones but where do I get them from? The one I had was supplied by one of the well known Morris Minor parts dealers so I expected it to fit without a problem.

I want some small grommets to block up some spare holes, nobody sells them.

Moral of the story - when you need something not 'Minor' specific - don't go to a Minor supplier! This applies to regular parts like track rod ends/brake parts/bearings and so on.....try your local Autoparts place first - and ebay for odd non car specific parts..

I've been to Screwfix, Tool Station, Marparts, Halfords and various hardware shops and DIY stores, non sell them small enough.

Make your own with a blob of black silicone sealer - leave it to go off and then fit as your grommet!

Logic according to Phil:- If you see an item and you think that you will need it you will most likley not; but if you see it and think that you will never need it you most likley will.
When ever I see a proper old fashioned motor factors/car parts/accessory shop I always go and dig around and see what they have that may come in use in the future i.e. grommets. Old fashioned they may be but they are always helpfull and willing and may have that elusive part on a dusty shelf you may need some day. Unfortunatley this type of establishment is going out of fashion. I have two favourites they are in Devizes and Frome.
Have just helped out a pre war Morris owner with some new British made 3/8 Whit nuts that have been sat on my wksp shelf for over 20 years. I knew that they would come in handy one day! You can never have too many spares/bits and pieces.
