I need 5W30 semi synthetic oil for daughter's Renault Clio 1.2 engine with twin OHC. Many advertised of course - some for GM cars, some for Ford etc etc. Is there really any difference??

Roy I think it's 99.99999999999 % no difference as long as they meet the specs or exceed them.I use semi and full synthetic in my old and newer scooters and fully synthetic in the modern (only to keep within the warranty ) and after stripping the bike engines down never seen any difference .if it walks like a duck ........etc :D

It probably does all come from one refinery.....I believe as long as I buy 5W30 to C3 spec - it should be fine. ASDA are in the lead right now for best price, with their 'own brand' full synthetic - I just need to check if it is marked C3. The 2 litre bottle is described as exceeding C3, but no such comment on the 5 litre bottle - which is better value.

Semi is a bit of a dodgy word really, does 1% synthetic still count as semi synthetic?
If it hits the right spec go for it I guess.

I just pick up the bottle at the counter of the motorfactor I go to (I think I pay about £12 for 5L of comma 5W30 semi synth)... Most "aftermarket" oils are meant to meet/exceed the specs for as many manufacturers as possible so they can get economies of scale
