Speedometers and the new MOT test

Post by jaguar68 »

Hi Chaps,

Can anyone tell me if and how the speedometer is tested on the new MOT test?

Since changing the gearbox for a Ford Type 9 the speedometer is wildly erratic and I have been checking the speed using a satnav. Now the MOT test has changed and the requirement is for the speedo to be fitted and working, can anyone tell me how this is actually carried out? Would the car pass the test even though the speedo doesn't have a hope of indicating any sort of valid reading?

Thanks in advance

John

As long as it illuminates and the glass isn't cracked you will have a pass.

Not quite! It does need to be 'working' - just as long as the needle moves (perhaps best if it's not flicking up and down wildly..) when the car is moving will be fine. But there is no suggestion of checking the accuracy.

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_670a.htm This may help, dosent look as if they actually test that the speedo is working, but fail if it obviously can't work9 Clealy defective)

Won't they test it at the same time as doing the brake test on the rolling road?

well don't know if the rolling road would get up enough speed to register on the speedo, they only turn very slowly.probably below 5mph.
