Red ignition light staying on

My saloon has been laid up in the garage over winter and I started it up last weekend (impressively on the 2nd attempt) but the red ignition light is staying on. I have checked the output with a voltmeter between the top wire and the lug on the dynamo and there seems to be plenty being generated (fluctuated around the 13.5 - 14volt area). Has anyone got any ideas what might be the cause? I did wonder if perhaps the battery charge might have diminished after being sat in the garage for so long and it just needs recharging, but I can't for the life of me find my battery charger.

All sorted now. The fan belt was fine. As I said I was getting a charge when I took one of the leads off the dynamo & tested between the lug on the dynamo & the wire. Now I've put the wire back on the light goes out, so I guess the problem was dirt or slight corrosion in that connection which was cleared when I took it apart & put it back together again.
