Right, right, right - yes I get very stressed by the smallest thing - at the moment it is timing / vacuum etc.

Thus, rather than post five millino posts here and get doubly stressed, is there anybody round Stockport / South Manchester with full-technical-imingy-vacuum knowledge I could visit some evening to check over my Minor with me to check timing etc?

I'd appreciate it.

It's such a simple thing - the importance of 'timing' is SO over emphasised.... Just set it for best/smoothest idle - takes a couple of minutes at worst - then check it's not pinking...........or kicking against the starter on cold starts....... SIMPLES!

That's what I did - and it seems to work fine. BUT no matter how advanced I make it I can't hear any pinking. So worried that it is TOO far advanced and I simply can't hear any pinking and it will thus damage the engine. There seems SO MUCH movement I can make with the distributor with it making seemingly no difference!

Sounds like your problem is the weights in the dizy

Pssibly. That's why I'd like an hour of somebody's time to check out what I have done to see if all is well - if anybody is around Stockport.

Take it to Paul, at millenuim morris minor centre, upper cholton road, cholton, manchester. he will get it tuned up like a new one and reasonable price too. say i sent you and he will look after you...

When you twist the rotor arm with your fingers - does it spring back?

It does spring back, but not with any 'force'?

I think a trip to Millennium motors might be a good idea to get it done properly once - are you allowed to watch whilst it's being done?

I might even get a timing light... JUST so I can see the exact timing figure once it does work A1.

a strobe is useful but ,for exact timing you need to know the revs value e.g. 1 degree before TDC at 800 revs,you will get a rough enough reading tho

I have a multimeter type rev counter - how would I use that in conjunction with a strobe to do timing - can you explain?

Strobe is useless - what figure will you set it to?? The rotor springing back indicates the mech advance is working just fine. Don't waste yer money on a 'tune up' - it's really not worth it for a standard engine.

Okay, yes BMC - my wife says that too... about a tune up. So, no prof tune, no strobe, etc. Fine - but without any noticeable pinking as a point to retard FROM, WHEN is it right? How do I know I'm not damaging the engine by having it too far advanced?

It pulls up hill in fourth, idles ... well a little thumpy but same as every other minor Ive been in, doesn't use much petrol or oil , does 60 mph comfortably with no strain... should I just shut up and be happy?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

sounds like a good Minor you wouldn't expect an old lady to do a marathon

maybe, ask for paul, he is the son of the owner and minor legend, you can talk to him and he no's his stuff...

Mechanic fine- said engine basically spot on! Happy now Though might visit Chorlton to find out about vacuum!!
