New Coil

Hi All,

have just fitted a new coil to my '66 Saloon with 1275cc engine after the old coil failed.

On testing the car I noticed a couple of things.

Firstly, the engine is more responsive. I can understand this if the old coil wasn't working correctly.
The other oddity is that the engine note has changed, the whole tone is lower throughout the rev range and it cruises much more happily at 60mph than before. Any ideas on why this should happen?

Hi!

It could just be that your old coil wasn't supplying the correct current... (wasn't charging up correctly) or something??? Did you replace the points too? I found out that my car was a damn site more powerful after I'd replaced the coil and points :D

Just a note - cause I nearly lost my coil completely after I replaced it - Make sure everything's tight!!! :D

I didn't and ended up stranded on the M3 :o

And is it just me, or do the new coil brackets seem a lot less hardy than the good old ones? My old one looks far more sturdy than the one currently on there...

Hi Nikki,

thanks for the warning, I will check it all again tomorrow! I forgot to put that I didn't touch anything else when I did the coil, points have been in about 2.5k miles, cleaned the plugs/distributor cap/checked points about 1 month ago.

You are right about the bracket. The old one had an enclosed hole on each side for the screws, this one just has an open ended hole type thing. The old one was made from much thicker metal too, but I ended up using the new one so I didn't have to shine up the old one!

Glad to see that Hebe is going to be alright by the way :)

Grainger - a number of things pointed to the coil. It started with a misfire that just got worse and worse. It ran fine for the first couple of miles or so then began to misbehave when warmed up. The coil also got hot and the car was difficult to restart when hot.

Anyway, we have been out 2 or 3 times since it was replaced, and all seems well, just wondered why it was so much more eager!

yeah when mine died it would start ok but then lost power when it got warm until it wouldnt rev at all. do you use any different kind of coil than the standard one we'd use on the 1098 engines ?

i keep a spare now but i think they are generally very long lived, although i heard they can be damaged by incorrectly adjusted points ?

Hi all
looking at this posting reminded me of something I saw the other day.
Vintage Motor Spares are offering a replacement coil with Lucas sticker. However, it is an HA12 rather than an LA12 (standard fitting) I emailed them about the difference and they said it was a higher powered coil but same design.
Has anyone had experience of this type.
I am tempted to get one as they look like the original with logo and it has screw connectors which are right for my 998 engine

Hi All,

not sure whether the coil I bought for my 1275 engine is different to the coil for the 1098, but I do know that it is an updated coil. From memory the new part number is 11040 and this is a direct replacement for a 11030, but that is just from memory, I sort of glazed over when the chap at the motor factor explained it! New coil is made by Intermotor I think.

I think the old coil had been on for, as far as I can tell, about 20 years so had done it's job!

Hi,

Was the old coil wired backwards (+ve & -ve reversed)? The engine will run ok, but the coil will only produce around 50% (?) of its rated output.

My coil gave exactly the same symptoms as it warmed up, it died on me on a very busy motorway roundabout in Dublin. Character building I reckon...... :oops: :o :evil: :cry: !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone else noticed how you can conjour up the strength of a bear when you break down in traffic and you have to push it out of the way?

Errr don't think the connections were reversed. The previous owner did 32000 miles in about 4 years with no trouble from the ignition system, and the coil was on the car long before that.
We have done about 1000 miles per year for the last 4 years but we have been doing an awful lot of work over that time so much of that time was spent in the garage in a dismantled state. Maybe the inactivity had something to do with bringing about its failure?
All the car does in our ownership is 10+ mile runs so I reckon it was probably old age that finished the coil as it just failed suddenly (about 2 months ago we did 130 miles on a trip and it was fine).

By the way I popped into the motor shop again today for some oil for t'Mog and found that the coil I use on the 1275cc engine is the same as 1098cc engines in Moggies from 1968-1971.
