Hi, I am new to the site and only just taken charge of my Morris Minor 1000 1966, she is my first Morris Minor and I feel a bit daft but I cannot open the petrol cap! She came with three keys one opens doors the other starts her and there is a third one with a black plastic top that goes very very slightly into the petrol cap lock but no further. Please can someone tell me what to do? My OH is away and will not be back for a few days and I really wanted to take her for a drive before he gets back :( but need to top up the petrol.
Thank you very much for any help.

Ask the person who sold you the car........ Many types of locking petrol cap - have you tried the key both ways round?

Try some oil down the key hole, it may just be stiff

Does the petrol cap have a black plastic top with a flap over the keyhole? If yes, then the key with the black plastic top sounds like the correct one. If the cap is chrome or stainless steel then the key will not usually have a plastic cap.

All locking caps were add-on and sold in different forms by most accessory shops; so over the years anything could have been fitted. As others have said, try oil, and ask the previous owner to demonstrate. If all else fails, then open the boot and locate the petrol filler pipe. There will be a rubber hose secured by a "jubilee" type clip. If you remove the clip nearest the filler (ie not the tank end) then you can remove the filler pipe, and petrol, and replace the filler pipe complete with cap. That is, of course, only a short term solution!

If you can get the key wokring, then get a spare cut!

If all else fails you could hammer a big screwdriver into the lock and turn it like a key. I went to see a car once and the owner was showing me round andhe said he left the key at a petrol station miles away from home! He just used a screwdriver worked like a charm! least you could by a replacement cap and have more than one key
Regards,
John
