On my 1958, 950 minor Saloon,The alloy thermostat housing had a threaded boss which had a screw in fitting with spade end connector. Thinking this was for a Temp Gauge. This was siezed and had to be broken off, I now need another one the same so i can fit a Gauge, I can`t find one only the plain ones with no boss. I need to know where to buy one, And if i have to use a plain one, where would i take connection from heating side to get to Gauge. Thanks boydogs.

These thermostat covers with temp gauge sender are rare and expensive. Why did it 'have to be broken off' ??? Just unscrew the studs........

I'm at a loss to see why one of these 'stat housings complete with sender was fitted, only to be destroyed and then you want another so you can fit a gauge?

Last one I had was bought for £1 and I later sold it for £30+

Don't understand why it had to be removed at all - never mind 'broken' !!!

Bought car as none runner, Had to strip engine to do rebore ect. took housing off and found no thermostat. Was on standard pistons, only covered 58,000 but 1&4 top of bores ridged at top, Had to be bored to +40, Short pipe cyl. head to block was blocked, Dizzy advance/retard solid and washer under heater tap covered hole compleatly.This is why the housing had to come off. If i go back to standard housing, where do i fit the sensor? Thanks for your reply`s boydogs

Unfortunately yes, I doubt you'd get one on ebay for much less.

You cannot fit a sender to a plain housing unless you can fabricate something yourself. The only other way, suggested to me on this forum and working perfectly after many thousands of miles, is to use a bottom hose with heater take-off for a later car.

It's worthwhile also to note the advice elsewhere on the site about preventing stuck 'stat covers in future - a liberal smear of petroleum jelly works wonders.

Obviously it was seriously overheating. Pity to wreck the cover - if you had applied heat/Plus Gas to the studs - and unscrewed them - would have saved you time/effort/£30!! But the good news is - you have a sensor on the head!! Just use it for the temp gauge......

Do 948 engines have a provision in the head? Thought it was just 1098's with that.

And all 1275........ (and Mini 998 heads after 1980 or so..)

I'm desperately looking for my stat housing, I'm sure I have one, if so I'll be selling it from the back of my van at the national, along with other junk. Form an orderly queue!

Oooh right yes - I thought the two threads were for the same car/problem...... So indeed - no thermo boss in a standard 948 head. Either fit a Mini head with the boss - or as mentioned above, old bottom hose used as top hose could provide an outlet - but an earth return would have to be applied to the sensor.....

That's from a Mini SPi/MPi.....the threaded hole is too small for standard thermo sensors...Maybe there is room to bore/tap it for the normal sensor????
