Hi all,

I want to paint the front grill(in front of the radiator)on my MM. It is a white colour but I don't know what shade of white. Would anyone know the shade of white(pushing my luck) and a code number that my local paint supplier could use to mix this shade. Also is this colour likely to be the same colour as the wheels?

my mog is old english white. i assume that all white grills and wheels are therefore OEW however, there may be another type of white.

It all depends what year your Moggy is. Up to Feb 1959 Grills were usually Body colour, Feb 59 - July 60 Pearl Grey, July 60 - Oct 67 Old English White - Wheels were usually the same colour as Grille. Oct 67 onwards Grille was Snowberry White & Wheels Dark Silver.

Old English White is more of a creamy colour - hope this helps

Harrymango & sb thanks for the info. My MM is a 58 so the grill has possibly been painted the wrong colour but I like the Old Engliush White so will see if I can get hold of this locally.

Ref the Old English White, it has been suggested by many on this
site that Rover Arum white,from halfords, is very close. However,you
will have no trouble obtaining spray cans of Old English from the
Minor specialists.

I did my wheels up for the rally and used A can of Old English white (I got it from an Auto Parts place in Reading) - There was even enough for me to do the grille too!

Really? Poot. That means not only do my wheels not match and need painting, they need painting in an entirely different colour to the one they are.... And I'm not sure I can bear to change Rebecca's wheels now, I mean she's had white wheels since before I owned her....

Of course, now I'm wondering when she was changed.... Gah, I think I may have to get some history for her somehow.

Why on earth worry about it??? Most people prefer the white wheels anyway (I converted my last silver wheeled car to white).

while were on the subject of wheels and their paint. What the best way to remove several layers of paint from them, preferably without removing the tyre or burning/melting it. Also, jeffte, i think you find theres a device that allows you to remove the wheels from the car without sracting the wheel paints. never seen one though!

As a more serious comment....

I'm not really *worried* about it, merely pondering whether I should actually paint them the correct colour when (eventually) I get around to it*, however, thing is I'll probably keep them white because I think it looks nicer. And it's not like I ever, ever, ever, ever plan to sell Rebecca.

What's wrong with Rebecca eh? I mean, she works... She goes faster than any minor I've seen with a standard enginge and carb etc, She's just a bit... well used *Grins* We love Rebecca!

Hmm - without wanting to be all PC on you, wouldn't it be better to include a few more people? ;-) I just remember the fuss when someone wanted a register especially to exclude older owners....

I dont think thats correct as all Minors with the slatted type grill (which started in 55-56 ish) until the end of prodution were painted with Old English White.

The slatted grill appeared on the Series 2's from October 1954 and
the grills were painted in matching body colour except for the black
cars which had Birch Grey grills. This continued to February 1969
when the grills were painted in Pearl Grey. Thereafter,from July 1960,
all grills were Old English White.

What does it matter? I thought the early cars (atleast) were the colours they were because it was all left-over paint from the war. Completely different way of thinking to what we have now - the luxury of worrying over the difference between 'old-english' and 'snowberry'

(...although if you're needing to blend-in two sections or going for concours i can see the point)

If you are interested in keeping the car 'as original' or are entering concours then it matters a great deal!

She's very well used, and very well loved. And Vic seems to be getting used to the "you have to slam that door, it doesn't belong to this car" procedure (one day I'll work out how to make that door fit better).... She seems to have taken remarkably well to my opinionated moderate hatred of anything built after about 1970.....
