so.... the fuel pump packed up whilst I was out mooching around town.
I replaced it with my spare pump which has a new diaphragm and points. FIrstly this wouldnt work at all... ( iassume as it had been sitting for a while) now it wont stop clicking/pumping even with only the ignition on.
I removed one end of the pipe from the pump to carb and blocked this up with my finger to see if this would stop the pumping but it just keeps on pumping, so something is not right somewhere.

Any clues please

If it is a standard SU pump and it is ticking, I'm guessing the problem is the inlet & outlet valves on the pump. Two discs, if they have gunk or corrosion they will not seal properly. Easy to dismantle and clean.

Otherwise there may be an air leak in the inlet line.

Who fitted the new diaphragm and points? When somthing like this is done, it's best to USE the 'reconditioned' item immediately, and keep the 'known good' part you take off as your working spare. Try priming the pump with fuel - but the diaphragm and/or points may be wrongly adjusted.

Take your finger off and see if fuel comes out, if it does quickly refit the hose and try, as it might be an air lock. I presume you've got petrol!

father in law fixed the pump so i guess he may have set the points wrong, do you adjust them by bending the brass tabs? and what do you set them to? I guess the points could be too close together that would make it go all the time wouldnt it?
If i take my finger off fuel pumps ok plenty of petrol... it just doesnt stop when it should!

DO NOT bend anything..... Read the Manual and set it up as directed there......
