I noticed today the first signs of a problem with the front engine mounts , it looks like the rubber part is starting to come away from it backing plate . As they are quite cheap to buy my question is what is the proceedure for changing them with the engine in the car it looks a bit awkward with the studs on the mounting being at different angles to various other parts .

Be aware that new mounts have been reported as being 'too hard' - not sure if this applies to all suppliers, or just some. Yes - you need to take the weight of the engine with a jack, and undo the 4 tower-to-floor bolts on on side to allow it all to fit together (relatively) easily.....

This is the way I'd do it, others will have a different way.
First remove radiator, saves damage and gives the bit extra room to work.
Support the engine from below.
Loosen the top 2 nuts on the rubber mount to engine and the single nut to the pillar.
Remove the 4 nuts and bolts securing the pillar to the chassis leg and tie plate.
Finally remove the 2 nuts which you loosened to the engine and remove the pillar and mounting rubber.
This is what you are looking at.

Refit a new mounting rubber and fit to the engine, leave all nuts and bolts finger tight until all are fitted, the one by the tie bar is a bit tricky to get started but the make sure all are tight before refitting the rad.

Unless the old mounts are actually falling apart - I would be tempted to leave them well alone......

Thanks again BMC I had thought about doing this ie nothing but I also thought it was part of the MOT to look at the mounts although my car is MOT exempt I am determined to keep it to the MOT standard so I can justify a very good standard of self maintenance,

you often do find that the rubbers are peeling at the edges,but could last for years,I'm with BM leave well alone,the new rubbers are realy bad,very hard and can cause vibration,Mine did,found some second hand ones and refitted them.

I thought mine needed replacing so purchased new ones and after the installation I had vibrations in the car and so then reinstalled the old ones and vibrations gone. Only replace if you really have to, but agree with the others the new ones can have very hard rubber can cause the harshness and vibration for engine

Needs someone to make polyurethane mounts - to the correct shore. Cue Declan??

Some of these suppliers have their own workshops - so they surely know........or do they source parts elsewhere for the workshop ?
