hi , bought a morris minor a few months ago and only just noticed a rawlplug and screw attached to the carburettor , you cant call this an upgrade can you ?? ,should i take both of them out ,not sure what goes into the pipe , the car is running very lumpy on start up and sounds like its running on three cylinders then it gets better ticking over after about 3-5 minutes before setting off on a run so not sure if this has something to do with the rawlplug ?? any help would be great[frame][/frame]

Agreed. There should be a rubber tube going from there to the breather on the side of the engine - that should look like a chimney pot. The rawlplug is blocking the pipe that would otherwise suck air directly in, bypassing the air filter.

Your engine will have breathers fitted (rocker cover and cam follower cover) - just join the rocker one to that carb connection with a bit of rubber or plastic tubing.......

heres another photo , the rocker cover has a short large breather pipe which is connected to the air filter ,theres another metal breather pipe coming out and going down the side of the bottom half of the engine ?? , when i take the rawlplug out do i take the pipe off of the airfilter and try and connect it to the carb ,i doubt its going to reach so i would need to buy some more longer breather pipe ,then the air filter wont have a breather pipe connected ?? i'm confused [frame][/frame]

connect rocker breatherto the carb breather
leave the air filter thats ok without th breather pipe

That pipe is badly kinked which will become choked in no time (think of a hosepipe). If possible, use a longer pipe to prevent kinking.

today i removed the rawlplug and screw from the carb pipe and also removed that breather tube from the rocker box to the air filter , connected a new tube from the carb to rocker box and had to use a jubille clip on the carb end to hold it firmly on due to the carb pipe being a bit smaller but not sure if its 100% airtight that end but then again i cant pull the tube off without undoing the jubilee clip so it cant be to bad , started the car up on full choke and the normal very bad shaking and real lumpy engine running has now gone ,while the car was running i remove the tube from the carb and the engine revs slowed down and then put the tube back on and the revs picked up again ,kept the engine running for about 5 minutes while slowly pushing the choke in , basiscally the choke now has to stay about a quarter out to keep the engine running or else it will stall and stop, also when i turned the engine off the car over ran for 5-10 seconds then stopped ?? not sure what i need to do next any help would be most welcome ,thanks[frame][/frame]

You will have to retune the carb - pick up the idle speed first, and see if it keeps running with the choke fully in......

soon as you push the choke in the engine stops then it over runs , pick up the idle speed ?? how do you tune a carb ?? i'm lost already,was going to use a y tube join and connect the air filter rocker box breather and carb all together so not sure if that will speed up the engine ?? i did notice when i started the car up some clicking sound when turning the key in the ignition not sure what that was or where is was coming from but it stopped once the car started up??

No - don't join. The idle screws are on the side of the carb - one woks on the choke - the other works not on the choke. Twiddle them to see! You NEED a Workshop Manual.....

its not running on anymore when i turn the engine off which is good ,was running better for a day or two then started getting lumpy shakey again on start up , was showing a friend the car and had the engine running bonnet up he just touched one of the leads that runs to the spark plug and got a shock ,if there sparking he said the leads should not be touching each other as they could be arcing across each other ,there really old looking so was thinking i should get a set of ht leads and a new distributer cap , do i need to change the lead to the coil ?? or any other place or what are the best leads to buy , then i'll see if that helps with the running ,
