Footman James problem. No access to another vehicle.

I've just bought my first morris and I've tried insuring it with Footman James but they've refused to insure me
because I don't have access to another vehicle
. Is this a problem I'll have with other insurers?
The car isn't going to be used as a daily driver as I use my bicycle to commute to work and for anything else longer distance,
which usually involves my house mate, I hitch a ride with her.
Any advice?

Footman James will insure those without access to another vehicle under the club scheme... it may be worth sending a PM to Dace@FJ - who is the F.J representative on the site!

Assuming that you are a Member, ask the Derby office to contact FJ about this (It's also possible that your post will be seen by our contact at FJ, and he might well respond directly). FJ most certainly do insure people who own only Minors, so this sounds like a mis-understanding.

Ohh that's good to know. I am a member and they did ask this on the phone but didn't take my membership number. I'll contact Dace@FJ.

Hi,
I think this has been answered already but just to say that Footman James have insured me for years and my Minor is my daily driver, no other car when first insured and with unlimited mileage, no questions asked.
So I'm sure you'll be okay.

No longer true, on the facebook page a week ago dave youngs posted that fj had indeed stopped insuring new young members as their sole car. Only existing members would be renewed. I dont know if that has changed in the last week, but....

i usedto have access to anothr car but no longer
i have been with fj for quite few years
my premium nearly doubled as an only car
r&h will insure as only vehicle and my quote on that was £103.00
fj is £196.00 as an only car
as club insurers they need to get their act together i think

Not quite correct there Alex. The issue was never anything to do with young drivers specifically. TRUE classic vehicle insurance usually requires the proposer to have access to an everyday vehicle. The comments on the facebook page were in response to a specific query and not a generalisation so shouldn't be taken out of context. There has been some debate over whether proposers should have another 'main' vehicle but this is now put to rest
I've spoken to the original poster and our trading guys have been in touch with him and I believe this is all now sorted.

Thats good then. SO just to clarify, even if a young owner has no access to another vehicle, FJ will still insure them? If its for personal/business commuting?

There is no requirement for ANY member of the MMOC to have use of an everyday vehicle in order to obtain a classic policy for their Minor.
Personal/Business commuting is also acceptable subject to other criteria/rating factors so best to phone for a quote for your individual circumstances.
We all work really hard for you guys and we do appreciate the support of the club and it's members

An interesting point raised here:
When I first ensured with FJ it was, I believe, classed as social, domestic and pleasure usage, with no mention of 'business commuting' nor any inference that you would be penalised / have to pay an extra premium for such usage.
Naturally based on this I happily 'motored' along over the years, without giving it a second thought and automatically renewing each year without thinking any change was necessary.........(isn't ignorance bliss.... 
)
Now reading through this I'm wondering if I now need to be ringing up FJ to confess my sin and submit to a whopping great premium increase??
Though now with a house move pending (subject to the other party signing the dotted line and the exchange going ahead - very stressful time at present!) I have bought another car for the commute, as I am leaving Milton Keynes far, far behind (90 odd miles to be precise and although I will still be working here I won't miss living here!).
....................So should I bother, I wonder.................

FJ insurance with no use of another car does cover for going to and from a place of work
r and h have pleasure social and domestic and class1 use

Why the hell should it matter wether an insuree is a member or not on the type of cover they can obtain.
It all smells a bit old boys club and clicky!
