Would be owner....advice please

Hi
I am looking to buy my first Morris Minor.
I saw a lovely one today, it was a convertible. I am torn between a convertible or a saloon. Are there any particular things I need to consider if thinking of getting a convertible rather than a saloon? (beyond the fact that I will get wet....often) Are they generally more expensive?

Also, does anyone know a good place to buy one from in the South East?

Thank you

Madasa

First check if it is an original convertible or a conversion. Nothing wrong with a conversion if it is done properly and should be cheaper than an original
You need to take an experienced owner with you to check, body condition is critical.
Put your location in your profile and someone may offer to help

Although I didn't obtain my (replica) convertible from there, for the South East I would like to mention

http://www.morrisminorconvertible.co.uk/

When I was looking for my Convertible, I came across his website. The only problem is that you can't get in touch with him through e-mail and very often he doesn't pick up the phone. It is definitely easier for you to go there and have a look, which I couldn't due to the distance. So finally I bought my Moggie elsewhere.

But I know three people who got their Convertibles from Canterbury Convertibles, and they are all satisfied. He is not the cheapest but you get a value for money.

Regarding the replica convertible, I can support Mike Perry's view that there is nothing wrong with a replica, if the work is done properly. Supports have to welded into several places, some of which are not clearly visible at first sight. But apart from the lower price a replica has another advantage compared to an original convertible, if the conversion was only carried out recently. A replica usually has a stiffer body, because for most of its life it has been a saloon. And the more solid body design has helped to keep it tougher.

Anyway, the fun to drive is the same with both. And getting wet is not guaranteed, mine has only let a few drops of rain in when the rain came sideways in a storm, the occasional normal shower is kept out. My wife's Peugeot 206 CC was much worse in that and had to go back to the garage five times to be made watertight.

Cheers

Thank you both for your replies.

It was Canterbury Convertibles we went to....the guy seemed very knowledgeable and passionate about his moggies.

The one I looked at is an original convertible priced at £9750.

He also had a replica convertible which was lovely priced at £12,500.. The only thing I didn't like was the owner had swapped the seats for modern ones with head rests (safer I guess) but I guess I could change those back again.

Thanks for the advice re posting my location.....when I have finished dithering about whether I want a saloon or a convertible I may well do that.

Cheers

You really would need to keep a convertible in a garage (or at least under cover) when not in use........ The prices you quote sound extortionate to me.........
