Hello everyone, ive not been on here for a while, my minor has been off the road, im now getting it back on the road, I had a rat in my garage and the little s#$t chewed through all my windscreen washer hoses and chewed the top off the washer bottle too, he also chewed through the hose for my oil pressure gauge and he had a go at some of the wiring in the engine bay too. Although he wont be doing it again. (He got a few lead pellets in the head) anyway all thats fixed now, and new battery Installed, I started the old girl up this evening and I noticed water leaking from behind the cooling fan. So I took the fan blade off and wiggled the pulley on the water pump and water ran out from behind the pulley, does this mean the pump now needs replaced, is it easy to replace, should I replace anything else while im in there. Ill get a new pump and gasket do I need anything else, Thanks in advance Mark

yes ,change the pump ,make sure its the same as the one that comes off,they can differ in size ,whilst it's off change the bypass hose ,and be ready to explode when fitting if you use kevlar hoses ,good luck

Seems like the pump bearing has had it, best replace it. The seal has probably dried out as well. Good job the rat didn't drink any of the leaking water especially if it had antifreeze in it; not a nice death.--but nor is a head full of lead. A bit of practice seems in order---one well aimed shot would have been enough, if you felt the need for revenge.

Fairly easy job, possibly a few skinned knuckles tho. I was wondering why I had not heard from Uncle Ben from across the water for a while!

Right the new pump and stuff arrived yesterday. Just fitted the pump and This part on the old pump is shorter than the same part on the new pump (the part between the blades of the scissors)[frame][/frame]

This now means that this part on the new pump is rubbing now. (This face im pointing at with the scissors)
The pump was stated as suitable for a 1098 engine.
I haven't started the engine yet, I was just turning the fan blade by hand. And there is a bit of resistance, it doesn't spin freely.[frame][/frame]

There is a witness mark where it's rubbing, the fact that it still turns means that the interference is minimal, when cold anyway.
I'd find a way of getting rid of what ever nubbin is touching then see what happens with the engine at working temp.

Been over this before - the later/bigger pumps are for the 1275 engine - which has more clearance. Sometimes you 'get away with it' on the 1098. Either swop it for the correct pump -or make clearance by grinding the impeller - or the block!

well bm state that the 1 I bought suited the 1098, they also sell one with a short impeller, which they say is for early 948 engines.

this is the old 1,its knackered, it was leaking water and I think the bearing is gone too, I guess this is why there is so much movement in the impeller.

Bm should state that this pump is for 1275 engine tho may fit 1098 but the impeller might need a little grinding.

Pump out again, grinded down a tad, back in again, easier to turn the fan blade now. Hopefully thats it sorted now.

It should 'spin freely' - not just 'easier to turn'.....

Thats what I ment Bmc. How tight should the fan belt be.

pretty slack ,much slacker than moderns ,if too tight the water pump bearings will go,
mine moves about 3/4 of an inch on the long run ,and works fine ,
no slipping and charging ok ,was fitted around 3k ago.

Should I be able to pull the belt so it will move without the pulley moving. I dont understand what you mean by,

That refers to lateral movement, ie the tension when moving the belt in and out. 1/2 to 3/4 inch is good.

Now I understand. 3/4" inwards on the longest length of belt

the deflection on the longer run of the belt from the dynamo or alternator to the crankshaft pulley ,put your finger in the middle and deflect the belt in and out.
max movement should be 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch
