No V5

can anyone confirm that buying a vehicle WITHOUT a logbook is illegal?

I've received several enquiries from people quoting chassis nos, from
vehicles with NO regn nos.

Being naturally cautious, okay, suspicious, in both cases the exchange
of emails ceased when I requested body numbers!

Am I being too untrusting?!

It's perfectly legal, Chris. Have bought many a wreck without a V5C, only to go along to the DVLA local office and apply for one myself.

Selling a V5 without a vehicle present is however illegal........

Nothing to confirm the vehicle exists.

Exactly..... the contacts you had may have been fishing for information to authenticate chassis plates in their possession.

To be honest, paperwork is the first thing to be lost - and not just for cars :D
I've bought numerous cars without V5's and it's straightforward to apply for one. It is more difficult however to get one when vehicle is not on DVLA list any more.

it is not illegal to buy a car without a v5, i would only do this after meeting the seller and talking to him /her face to face, if they come out with any bull sh1t walk away. also with the application form a 25 quid cheque has to be attached, a bargain can be had as no v5 will put some poeple off it , it can still carry a risk
