please could anyone tell me if a HS1 will fit instead of an H1 and if so how do you fit the vacuum pipe

There never was (or is) an HS 1 SU carb. If you mean an H2 or HS2 - then it will fit if you also use the later matching inlet manifold.

many thanks,do you just cut the end off the vacuum pipe and use a push fit tube to the latter carb? and what do you do with the oil pipe to the air cleaner as new carb has a pancake type or should i throw that away

Usually the vac pipe will fit as you say - cut the end off and push in to rubber link. Pancake filter is not good - you MUST connect that breather pipe to the inlet in some way - best done after the air filter, before the carb if you can manage it. Later HS2 carbs have a brass pipe on the side to take the breather pipe.
