for college home work, we have to do a bit of research on Vin numbers, and out of curiosity, i thought I would find out about mine. So can anyone make any sence to as what each number/ letter means ?
Car No: M/AS3 871975
My car is a 1961 4 door saloon and was imported to newzealand where it was first registered and dragged back to cloudy country In 1990 where it would start to rust and bubble !
Thanks

Afraid not - the exemption applies to vehicles built pre - 1960.

It's not really a VIN (vehicle identification number) it's a vehicle descriptor number.
VIN numbers are 17 digits in lenght comprising of letters and numerals. They have some sort of worldwide significance to the vehicle origin and build. The first set of digits denote the country where vehicle is manufactured, the next denote body type etc, then the vehicle decriptor, then year of manufacture and engine type.
